Prof Johan W. Joubert is an associate professor at the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, where he also earned his Ph.D. He is associated with the University´s Centre of Transport Development. Prof Joubert´s interests are in developing appropriate decision support tools in the field of transport planning and modeling. He is now developing large-scale agent-based transport models for a number of South African cities and provinces to assist in policy evaluation and improved infrastructure planning. His research is funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF), the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL), and the National Treasury.
Prof Joubert and his group focus on two main issues: incorporating the dominating paratransit mode in South Africa into planning models to make the models more realistic and useful in decision-making; and capturing the behavioral models of commercial vehicles. Over the past years Prof Joubert has monitored more than 30,000 commercial vehicles´ GPS records to analyze their activity chain structures and extract useful behavioral models. He was also involved in evaluating the diversion of road users as a result of the open-road tolling as part of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project in South Africa. Prof Joubert is a professionally registered engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa, and member of professional organizations including the South African Institute of Industrial Engineering (SAIIE) and the Operations Research Society of South Africa (ORSSA). He has published more than 25 papers in peer reviewed journals and international conferences on optimization, transport and traffic modeling and simulation.
