VREF invests in research and education in Urban Freight
The Board of the Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF) has decided to invest substantially in the area of urban freight. VREF follows up previous investment in the program Future Urban Transport with two new Centers of Excellence starting in 2013, with the ambition to boost international knowledge and capacity building in the field.
The two new Centers of Excellence are:
  • METROFREIGHT: The local/global challenge of urban freight – hosted by University of Southern California (METRANS Transportation Center, Sol Price School of Public Policy) with Professor Genevieve Giuliano as Project Leader
  • Center of Excellence on Urban Freight Systems (CoE-SUFS) – hosted by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with Professor José Holguin-Veras as Project Leader.

The new Centers of Excellence have been recruited through an international open call for proposals, which attracted more than twenty teams to bid for the status of VREF CoE. In the final round, six proposals were reviewed for both scientific excellence and relevance to policy and practice.

VREF wants to promote the practical application of new knowledge within FUT programs. Therefore, one of the requirements in the call was cooperation with cities. We are pleased to know that several of the most progressive and interesting cities and industry partners will be collaborating with the CoE researchers.

No ongoing call.

The earlier call dated 131221, Financing Urban Access, Research Director, is now closed for application and the review process is ongoing.
