Mobility and Access in Sub-Saharan African Cities, Call for Presentations- Extended deadline until 24 June, 2019

TUMI,Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative, and VREF will host a 3-day workshop on state-of-the-art knowledge and innovation in Addis Ababa, 17-19 September 2019. This event will concern challenges and approaches for achieving sustainable urban mobility in Sub-Saharan African cities and focus focus on both cutting edge research and experiences of practical implementation of specific measures within urban transport. The deadline for submissions is extended to 24 June 2019.


The organizers are inviting interested researchers, decision-makers and practitioners from Sub-Saharan Africa to make presentations about their on-going work and results during the workshop. The presentations should be directly relevant to the core workshop themes:

  • User Needs and Practices, Equity Issues in urban mobility and access
  • Governance, Politics, Institutions and Finance to stimulate urban mobility and access
  • Emerging Business Models and Services Options in urban transport
  • Issues of Safety, Health and the Urban Environment in urban mobility and access
  • System Design and Modal Integration in urban transport

The presentations could focus on empirical research, case studies or pilot projects which will further the discussion and knowledge on current and future issues concerning urban mobility and access in sub-Saharan Africa. We particularly encourage participation by researchers from sub-Saharan Africa universities who have not previously worked on issues of mobility and access, but whose areas of expertise could be fruitfully applied for addressing such issues.

The goal of the discussions is to stimulate fruitful exchanges of insights, perspectives and experiences regarding approaches to implementing sustainable urban mobility in sub-Saharan Africa cities.

An abstract of 400 words (1 page) and CV of the presenter (max 3 pages) must be submitted in English by 24 june 2019 (new dead line).

The abstract will be reviewed by the organizing committee and approved papers will be announced on 15 july 2019.

The current Call is mainly directed to sub-Saharan university-based researchers with expertise on sustainable and equitable mobility and access in sub-Saharan African cities, and/or previously engaged in transport-related research, and strongly interested in carrying out interdisciplinary research on issues related to sustainable and equitable mobility and access,

The VREF invites PhD students and researchers in early stages of their career to apply for a Study Visit Grant to be supported with up to SEK 30 000.
