Released date: 200415

The invitation is extended until January 31, 2021

Addendum: 200511

VREF will respect existing rules and regulations regarding travel restrictions (particularly regarding international travel) due to the current COVID19 pandemic.

Based on these restrictions, VREF will reserve its right to approve travel applications during the pandemic. In 2020, and with reference to current international travel restrictions, VREF is willing to waive the requirement that mobility grants will only be awarded for visits to universities in countries outside the country in which the applicant is based.

VREF will thus consider applications for mobility grants to visit other universities *within the same country* in which the applicant is based.

The VREF invites junior and senior researchers, Ph.D. students and advanced (last year) master students who are based at SSA universities to apply for mobility grants for 2-4 weeks visits at universities in other SSA countries. The invitation is open until January 31, 2020 and visits should be carried out before February 28, 2021.

Researchers and students within the following groups are qualified to apply:

  1. researchers and Ph.D. candidates in research environments which are supported by, or actively engaged in, the VREF “Mobility and Access in African Cities” (MAC) program;
  2. advanced (last-year) master students at university departments with research teams who are supported by/actively engaged in the MAC program, and
  3. researchers who are not supported by the MAC program but who seek support for visiting a MAC research team.

The VREF wishes to have a broad distribution of grants between universities, thus in 2020 a maximum of two grants will be awarded to the same home university (that is, the university at which the researcher or student is based). You will find the guidelines for application attached to this mail.Finally, due to the COVID19 epidemic, we would like to mention that VREF will respect current restrictions and rules with regard to travel and reserve its right to approve applications during this period. VREF foresees that its funding of MAC mobility grants will continue in 2021.

The invitation to apply for a MAC Mobility Grant is open until October 31, 2020 and visits should be carried out before December 31, 2020. During 2020, the VREF Secretariat will handle applications at three occasions with the following closing dates: May 15, August 15 and October 31. All applicants will be informed of VREF’s decision within two weeks after each closing date.

The invitation includes guidelines for the application and information on VREF and the MAC Program to be found on the top of the column besides at "Completing Info".

For more information about the application process, please, download the document in the "Completing info" prior to sending your application to the VREF secretariat.
