The 3:rd conference on FUTURE URBAN TRANSPORT

This conference is a contribution to the development of knowledge about global transport development. The previous two conferences in 2000 and 2003 had as their main theme "how to cope with the complexity of the urban transport development". In this conference the aim is to understand “what is specific and what is generic for different paths of development of urban transport”. If we can distinguish specifics from generics, it increases the chance that we can assess transferability and non-transferability of know-how for the future. The western way of life is attractive to most people but global development in such a direction will cause chaos, promoting rising energy prices and a shortage of land in urban areas.

The conference is designed to be a meeting-place and discussion forum for analysts and key players. The role of leadership in the development process will be a key issue. An active audience is an important part of the conference, and time is reserved for discussions after the presentations under the leadership of a moderator. The afternoon of the fourth session has time dedicated exclusively to such discussions. During the final session, suggestions and ideas will be aired for new initiatives and future research directions within FUTURE URBAN TRANSPORT.

Session 2: The path to achieving a good system - what is generic and what is specific knowledge?
Session 3: What is the barrier to the transfer of know-how?
Session 4: How, why and when to change mindsets to create sustainable transport?

Objective of the conference

The major objective of this third conference is to create a meeting-place and a forum for debate for those engaged in:
(i) analysing the complex character of urban transport development
(ii) meeting the challenge of how to solve current problems
(iii) identifying ways of supporting the necessary process of change towards efficient, safe, equitable and sustainable urban transport systems.
