Workshop on Urban Transport Transition and Innovation for the 10th anniversary of CUSTReC's establishment, in Beijing, Sept. 19-20, 2016

The China Urban Sustainable Transport Research Center (CUSTReC) organized the International Workshop on Urban Transport Transition and Innovation in Beijing. The event was supported by WRI China and the VREF, The Energy Foundation (China), and China Communications Press Co., Ltd.

The theme of this workshop was to discuss the policy, strategy, planning, implementation approach and key technology of urban sustainable transportation transition and innovation development.

The workshop consisted of keynote speeches as well as roundtable discussion. The topics included "Safe, Green and Inclusive Development of Urban Transport", "Service Oriented Development of BRT System", "Big Data and ITS Application in Urban Transport", "Urban Public Transport Financing" "Challenges and Opportunities in the Promotion of New Energy Buses" among others. The chosen topics fulfilling the frontier demand of transportation industry with rich content and in-depth discussion, which builds a good platform for international cooperation in the field of urban transport, were widely praised by the attendees.

Vice president of CATS Xuezhong Cui chaired the event. President of CATS Baolin Shi delivered a welcome speech, Deputy director general of Transport Service Department Tuanjie Cai and Chairman of VREF board Anders Brännström made keynote speeches. The event was attended by representatives of transportation management departments, public transportation enterprises, and transportation industry associations from over 10 provinces and 21 cities from P. R. China, representatives from World Bank, International Transport Forum(ITF), World Resources Institute (WRI), Energy Foundation (EF), Institute for Transportation & Development Policy (ITDP), Bus Rapid Transit Center of Excellence /EMBARQ, Nanyang Technology University, and National Taiwan University.

This workshop was an important event in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the creation of CUSTReC as one of the top 10 Future Urban Transport Advanced Research Centers established by the VREF. The success of the conference further established CUSTReC's position of creating a high-end think tank in the field of urban transportation, which effectively expanded its cooperation with international partners such as the VREF, and enhanced CUSTReC 's influence in international urban traffic research field, and laid a good foundation for CUSTReC to create a well-known international think tank in transportation research area.


China Urban Sustainable Transport Research Center (CUSTReC) is the unique center dedicated to urban transport studies, officially approved by the Ministry of Transport, P. R. China. It is also one of the ten Centers of Excellence on “Future Urban Transport” funded and established by the VREF globally.  

The aim of CUSTReC is to explore a package of new methods, technologies and tools, and integrated solutions to realizing the sustainable development of urban transport. CUSTReC has accumulated rich experiences of multi-industry, cross-sector and interdisciplinary studies as well as international cooperation. It has built up a team of 60 research staff and engaged world famous transport experts as visiting scholars.
